The Mind Museum Summer Programs
Summer is usually associated with vacations, specifically vacationing from school work. Does this mean children will have to stop learning for two months or so and totally give in to idleness ? Definitely not I say, especially with extraordinary educational events like The Mind Museum Summer Programs being made available on the months of April to May.
I got to know about these programs when my family attended an event related to the second anniversary of The Mind Museum. Whenever possible, I prefer to have my children learn new skills or engage in a new activity for summer. This I have to say, at least one of the summer activities lined up by the museum will certainly get your child’s attention.
C.S.I. 101
C.S.I. 101 is a comprehensive module on basic forensic science. Think Crime Scene Investigation as in popular TV shows of similar titles. Participants are to be divided in teams as they are trained to gather and analyze evidence from crime scenes. They will also be made to present their cases to a panel of investigators as they make their way through staged crime scenes. A Forensic Art Workshop will also be given for the 18-25 age group in the topics of composite sketching and forensic photography which are both used in solving real-life cases.

JUNIOR MIND MOVER PROGRAM
The Junior Mind Mover Program is now on its 3rd Year. It consists of a series of exercises and workshops designed to expose kids to the real work of scientists in museums. There will also be extensive learning about the Museum exhibits as well as creative science communication through experiment demonstrations and activities on different science fields. Many parents of previous enrollees describe this as a “transformative” program.

SOCCER SCIENCE
Is science applied in soccer play? Apparently it is especially in this program which is both a full soccer game and a science workshop. Participants will be taught to understand the sport through the lens of science by applying physics principles in improving game performance. The program will also have the players working on a “secret” kind of ball while learning the logic of curve balls, trajectories of long shots, and the anatomy of the skilled player.

My Say
When asked, both my children chose the Marine Science Camp partly because of the beach setting and the possibility that it can be a family activity for all of us. I’m thinking though that we better put immediate attention to having those long-planned swimming lessons first. When pressed further, my son says he might probably want to try the C.S.I. 101 program while my daughter thinks the Junior Mind Mover Program is pretty interesting. It did not escape my attention that they both willingly went to the Soccer Science booth and had a go in kicking the ball. I now therefore conclude that given the right program, motivation and encouragement, kids are really quite open in trying new things. At this point in time, I would really like them to discover for themselves the interests they would like to seriously pursue.
