The Emotions of Photography
The emotions of photography is captured by the camera in the steady hands of a photographer with a keen eye for spotting possibilities in a single moment. He knows the science but does not ignore the art. He develops an angle but not without a heart.
Photography
Photography traces its origins to a time when the camera was not yet existing. It is actually believed to be a result of a combination of several technical discoveries instead of one. The modern day camera was said to be a product of efforts to find a way of fixing and retaining images in the so-called camera obscura which is basically a box with a hole in it where light can pass through and produce an image on paper.
The first permanent photograph of nature was taken in 1825 while the first photo of a person was taken in 1838. Pictures were originally in black and white as the first color photograph was taken in 1861. The first commercially successful color photo came in 1907 through Autochrome. Kodak came out in 1935 with their color film known as Kodakchrome. At present, it is the digital camera that is serving photo needs of most people.
Photography has been used by scientists to record and study movements although most people use it at present simply to preserve memories. This is where special moments are captured and send their message to form a story. This is where the emotions of photography transform picture into art.
Human Emotions
The reason why photographs are especially interesting to look at is the effect it has on human emotions. No photograph can be considered good unless it is able to reach within and elicit reactions. The more a photograph is able to connect to human emotions, the more it is able to find its place in everyday life and situations.
Capturing emotion in a photograph requires photographers to find that one moment that will result to one extraordinary shot whether in a candid or posed session. Sometimes it would require many shots, sometimes one, sometimes photographers wait and allow the subjects to settle in before they fire away. The subjects need not even know that the photographer is already starting. The best photographs depicting human emotion are usually those that capture fleeting memorable moments that happen in a second.

How to Capture the Moment
Photographers should know that it requires patience to capture the desired emotion in a photograph. It is rarely a one pose-one shot deal. Doing small talk to loosen up the subject/s is a usual practice of professional photographers. Before any scheduled photo session, it is best to know the subject a little by asking questions, researching if required, and anything else that will provide a sense of familiarity between the photographer and the subject/s.
A photo session may entail taking warm-up shots, sometimes plenty of it. There are no exact numbers here, just the exact moment. That moment can possibly come in between sessions or in between shots, even while taking a break. Photographers will just have to anticipate that it will come and they should be ready for it.
My Say
The technicalities of photography may have to be learned. However, human understanding has to be part of learning if the goal is to produce photographs that portray real human emotions specifically in a posed setting. The emotions of photography are there and photographers who have trained their senses to be attuned to humanity are the ones who capture such emotions.

I’ve always loved photography. I was born seeing my father using his Nikon SLR. I hope I can get to have my own DSLR as I just use a point & shoot. 🙂
Nice photos, btw.
Teresa Martinez
I hope to improve in taking photos since they are very useful in making posts like this.

It’s really hard to capture an emotion or a mood but a good photographer always manage to do that because they feel it.
Teresa Martinez
I have seen your pictures and they are quite impressive. I envy those who have such a feel for photography.
Dorry Lyn

Teresa Martinez
I am trying to have that patience myself.

Thank you for sharing the history of photography, when and how it started.I like taking a pictures, because for me this are all my treasures. My model is my daughter, who likes to pose in any manner she would like.
Teresa Martinez

That’s why I would prefer stationary objects to take photos. No one to direct to. I’m really not good and creating an art scene. I like nature taking its course.
Teresa Martinez
Taking pictures of still objects also require skills not possessed by all.

True! photography is beyond expensive cameras and lenses, it’s beyond clicks..I consider a photo amazingly great if I see the emotion of the subject or the subject channels an emotion to me. I admire those photographers who are able to connect to their subject and their audience. Great tips!
Teresa Martinez
Same here. Not everyone has the ready makings of a photographer but everyone can surely try.

Photography is really quite magical, you can’t save the moment or stop the time but you can capture it and it would last for a long time.
Teresa Martinez
That is true. One of my simplest joys in life is to look at pictures of people and events of the past which matter to me..
jheylo
those are definitely gorgeous photos and i can feel the emotions of each photos too 😀 i love photography and i have photo collections too but usually they’re all about natures. I would love to photo shoot something like this though.
Teresa Martinez
Beautiful photos such as this inspire me to dream that I will get to take that one picture that I can be truly proud of.

I learned something about photography here 🙂 Honestly, I really wanted to really capture good photographs but I think I know now what is lacking, the creation of a moment before I click the shutter 🙂 Very helpful info for photographer wanna-be.
Teresa Martinez
I’m glad you found this post useful. I am a very challenged “photographer” so my realistic goal is to be able to take pictures that are good enough t6o accompany my articles.
Gven-Rose
to be a good photographer is a talent capturing the right emotions and angle is not easy…
Teresa Martinez
Some people are more “gifted” in this aspect but this should not prevent others from trying.

Amazing shots! You are gifted! I wish I knew you when I had my wedding 8 years ago! hehehe, I probably would hire you! Good job!
Teresa Martinez
How I wish I took the pictures myself but no, these are photographs taken by a professional – Mr. Gil Hontiveros. I featured them here because because I found them exceptionally good.

What a lovely photos, I love the second one, I always wanted to be a photographer but I am not good in taking a photos, and reading your post inspires me to do photo shooting..
Teresa Martinez
These photos really should inspire people like us to aim for more professional-looking photographs.

Now I am more aware that taking photos isn’t just about clicking on the shutter and looking at the viewfinder. I have been wanting to study photography but it is just too expensive for me. Thanks for this post. I learned something from it.
Teresa Martinez
Taking photography even as a hobby can be costly but if we really would like to pursue it, then we can probably find a way.
Chubskulit Rose
I love your description of photography. That jump shot is just gorgeous!
Teresa Martinez
Thanks, I love that shot made by professional photographer Gil Hontiveros too!
GIL HONTIVEROS
Just to share how I took those images.
Its true that in photography you have to be patient. You have to wait for the moment to happen and click your shutter to get the emotions, then feel and actions of your subject.
But for me its the other way around, I really don’t wait for the moment, I create the moments. I set the stage where I will put my subject, placing them where there is quality light not quantity of light. I put them to some situations where they can do their thing naturally like talking, laughing, hugging, kissing, etc… then thats the time I click & click & click… There goes your money shot. 🙂
Capturing this kind of emotions is just like a movie. Your subject is your actress & actor and you as the director.
Teresa Martinez
Take it from the professional photographer, my dear readers. Remember to create the moment while directing your main performers.
Thanks Gil for this very essential tip.

Patience to capture the moment? I guess I don’t have too much patience because my photos are not good. 🙁 I’ve noticed that my photos are either blurred or out of focus, have bad lines, etc. Maybe photography is not for me, I’ll be the model, instead. 🙂
Teresa Martinez
The waiting part in capturing an excellent photograph just shows that photography is not for everybody but you do offer a good idea for an alternative which is to be in front of the camera.
Francis Balgos
It’s no wonder people are so taken about photography.. and as always, it requires a practice hands, but sometimes the bliss of a good luck.
As is, photography is about painting or drawing with light.
It’s all about light, even in the darkest of the night, a photograph can be drawn with a single burst of it.
Teresa Martinez
You offer an interesting component of photography here.
Pinoy Travel Freak
Wow, I really love your photos! It’s fascinating how colors can convey different emotions. Sometimes, a boring photo becomes interesting when you turn it into black and white. 🙂
Teresa Martinez
Black and white photos certainly deliver the drama that makes them more interesting.
Mark Morfe
One has to have a skillful eye, experience and luck to capture those emotions.
Teresa Martinez
Luck is probably the equivalent of being at the right place and time to capture the picture.
Ted Claudio
I agree with “He knows the science but does not ignore the art”. Both are important in photography.
Teresa Martinez
A photographer who only knows technicalities may find it difficult to produce photographs that appeal to emotion.
RonLeyba
Photography techniques today and from the past really changed a lot. If you will notice at vintage photos, you will see the usual, blank and plain looking faces of people being photograph. Now, you will see a lot of style, techniques including jump shots and wacky faces. All in all, photography is taking it to a higher level, so the skills and techniques must be continuously learned.
Teresa Martinez
Yes,the techniques in photography need to be learned continuously to remain current with customer needs.
Carl Custodio
Amazing photos! I love you what you said at the beginning. “He knows the science but does not ignore the art.” Are you also into photowalks?
Teresa Martinez
Just to clarify, theses pictures aren’t mine but I featured them here because I found them exceptionally beautiful. Personally, I haven’t experienced doing photowalks.
Ralph Marcuss
I think photography is capturing moments that will never comeback.
Teresa Martinez
Yes, the images taken by picture may be a memory preserved by a camera.
Alwin
I really love to learn more about photography and this post is part of the nuggets of knowledge that I’m taking with me as I attempt to take better photos
Teresa Martinez
Thanks for appreciating.
Donald Pagulong
The best words to describe your photos is… “Simply beautiful”. nothing more nothing less.
Teresa Martinez
I think they are beautiful as well thus my decision to feature them here.
Tess Chancellor
Photography for me is capturing my children’s every moves, their happiness and excitement and humorous reactions. I know how important it is in our lives. Not all of us are professional photographers but it is best to learn the basics and techniques even if you are just an amateur one.
Teresa Martinez
We all have personal favorites for a photo subject but all parents I think will be happy to take pictures of their children.
Trisha
Almost all of the bloggers I know are into photography. Actually I am sort of into it too but not as much as my friends.. I admire you guys. 🙂
Teresa Martinez
All bloggers should learn at least the basics of photography since good pictures can add good value to any post.
amayachika
Hehehehe….I have shared your 1st pic above and so many was curious about it. Then I give your link to them.
Teresa Martinez

Franc Ramon
I think photography is something that can grow on you and can be mastered through time, mentorship and a lot of practice.
Teresa Martinez
Yes, I think photography is something that can be mastered by constant practice and study of techniques.
Jerwel Adrian
Photos really do take emotions…even though your subjects are not modelling or just having fun…
Teresa Martinez
As an onlooker, the emotions for me provide the effect.
Ellen Bernardino (@ellenbernardino)
I will now take note that in capturing a photo, it should entail emotion and patience in order to convey the emotion of the subject.
Teresa Martinez
I think the secret to beautiful photos is the emotion that photographers put into their work as well as that of the subject.
