Caravanning – the Social Camping
Camping and caravanning is getting to be a popular option chosen by families who are trying to enjoy outdoor destinations while avoiding the high cost of accommodation. The practice has been existing for quite some time except that its benefits have only been more recently rediscovered by modern families. Many have since found out that expenses for outdoor leisure activities can be considerably pared down by bringing their own accommodation with them or staying in caravanning facilities.
Camping and Caravanning
Camping is a fairly familiar outdoor recreational activity where people enjoy nature, away from urban areas and civilization. The most basic housing structure used by campers are portable ones such as tents. Tents are easily brought along, erected, and dismantled in the barest camping site.
The popularity of camping was at its highest during the 20th century. The most common venues were public and private parks or camping grounds. Camping was an activity readily associated with youth organization activities such as scouting. In time, the concept of social camping developed where regular campers composed mostly of families, arrange events for socialization.
Social Camping and Caravan Holidays
With the introduction of social camping, a specific market niche arose for camping facilities that can offer amenities fit for family holidays. The facilities however should deviate from the usual costly travel facilities such as hotels to address the renewed interest in cutting on costs. The worldwide economic downturn has caused many families to reconsider their holiday spending habits.
In UK, staycation became a preferred option for most families who are cutting on holiday travel costs but are not willing to forego what is still seen as necessity especially during stressful times. Staycations are vacations taken in the home country as opposed to the more costly overseas vacations. Camping and caravanning sites offer one of the more productive “budget” activities for the family.
Caravan Holiday Options
Although the use of tents in camping and caravanning remain popular, campers who desire additional comfort are observed to be opting for more permanent structures which can either be movable or not. These include motorhomes, cabins, recreational vehicles, and touring or static caravans. Those who are not able to leave the luxuries offered by homes will most probably choose glamping which is essentially a glamorous way of camping since the amenities usually offered by hotels can also be had in the so-called boutique camps.
Caravan holidays have become the equivalent of budget holidays. The most popular are the seaside and countryside destinations. There are several reasons why caravanning continues to increase in popularity. Some of these are flexibility in coming and going where the need for reserving accommodation is not usually necessary, more chances for family togetherness in going back to the basics, and the desire to go green as vacationers are encouraged to leave less carbon imprints.
My Say
We are familiar with the line “Work Hard, Play Harder“. This calls attention to the fact that as individuals and families work hard to earn a living, the more necessity there is to take time out and relax. However, there is a need to adjust leisure activities to the capacity to support them. Caravanning as a form of social camping is seen as one way of beating the high cost of leisure travel.

Oh wel love camping in this family. During the summer time we love to visit the mountains and we like to camp out in the middle of nowhere especially in Colorado. Looking forward to visit the mountains again this coming summer though. We love to camp, but the only thing we don’t like is taking the tent off and packing it up when wet and dirty since it rains a lot up in the mountains or due to some morning dew. We are hoping to buy an RV someday though so it will be an easy route to enjoying mother nature without having to pitch a tent. But it is fun though!

Packing up is really the least desirable part of camping but it is certainly part of the fun when done as a family.

My children often imagine this scenario as we are not yet able to go to real camping sites as a family. As of now they have to contend themselves with putting our tent in the garden.
