Putting personal and business lives in order can be quite a challenge with the tendency of people to accumulate physical possessions. Whether they are retained because they are actually needed or their owners simply cannot let go of attachments developed with such possessions, these items will add to the clutter if not properly stored. Though not exactly a very recent idea, more and more lives are being given a semblance of order through the self-storage option.

What is Self-Storage?

A self-storage facility offers spaces for rent to individuals and companies for the purpose of storing personal or business items. Rented space can be in the form of containers, lockers, rooms, and even outdoor spaces for bigger items like cars and boats. Self-storage companies  can offer storage facilities in multi-level buildings or single level structures.

Modern self-storage facilities first became visible during the 1960s in the United States although there were believed to be a much earlier counterparts in Ancient China. The self-storage industry is presently flourishing in several countries including the US, UK, Australia, and France. The demand for it continue to grow and the self-storage industry is starting to develop in other countries as well.

Why Rent a Self-Storage Facility

The main reason why people or companies would opt to rent a self-storage facility is to have a secure place wherein to place items that can no longer be accommodated at home or in the principal business office.  A home or office that is clearly overloaded with personal and business items ceases to be a functional space for a home or business owner. Beneficial living space is highly compromised when owners continue to add to the clutter without looking for ways to correct the situation.

Personal properties that can be stored in this type of facility include valued collections, furniture, and books, among others. Businesses usually make use of this facility to store inventories and important documents. Renting a self-storage facility is much cheaper than renting a whole warehouse. Owners are also allowed to use their own lock and key to ensure that employees will not even have casual access to their belongings.

People who may need to rent a self-storage facility include:

1. People who are going through specific life changes such as marriage, divorce, death in the family, work transfer, and others.

2. People who frequently travel to a specific country where the situation calls for a place to store personal items that cannot be brought back and forth.

3. People who are having their homes renovated or remodeled.

4. People who need a secure place to store important items such as a collection that needs to be stored in a climate-controlled area or a boat that cannot fit in the home garage.

5. Business people who need a place to store temporary additional bulk in inventories or a manageable place to store records that are not regularly needed in the office.

Putting Lives in Order Through Self-Storage

Much stress in human life in caused by too much clutter at home and at work. There is a need to prevent being overwhelmed by the pile of items and documents since delaying or procrastinating will only lead to more clutter and more stress. There are steps that can be taken to prevent this and one of this is restoring order through self-storage option.

1. Set aside a day to sort items.

2. Segregate items that need to be kept and stored from those that can be disposed of through donation, sale, or categorized as trash.

3. Find a suitable self-storage facility in relation to the size required, the terms and requirements of the company, and the location.

4. Items for storing must be labeled and packed properly to prevent breakage and other forms of damage.

5. To prevent the return of clutter, owners must devise an organized system of storing of items to follow.

My Say

Humans seem to be more and more inclined to accumulate possessions. Such inclination tends to impose on the need for people to maintain their own personal space as well. If items that seem to be overflowing at home or in the office are worth keeping and taken cared of, then it is worth storing them in self-storage facilities.

Those who do choose this option however must be conscious of their responsibility to pay the rent. The law allows self-storage facilities to hold auctions for contents of units that remain unpaid for a given period. The winning bidder will gain the right to all the contents which can be disposed of as preferred. Many have uncovered “treasures” in this way thus the increasing popularity of storage auctions.
