Having been a very sickly child, I had to contend with taking in so many medicines, it literally made me sick.  You see the problem with taking one medicine to cure one ailment is that it tends to create another ailment, especially when taken long term. As I grew older, I realized it was better to manage my health with less. This I tried to do by understanding how to prevent recurrences whenever possible.

Here are my top three personal home remedies which I believe works for me.

Water

When I had kidney stones removed about 10 years ago, the doctor told me to be very careful. He said that once a stone former, always a stone former. He advised me of the suggested diet. When I asked if there is any maintenance drug I have to take to prevent recurrence, he advised me that it would be better if I drink at least 8 glasses of water everyday, more if possible.

Thankfully, my doctor was not inclined into prescribing medicines, if there is another way to achieve the same end. That started me into being a voracious water drinker. I automatically shift to Wilkins distilled water whenever I need to cleanse, although I would prefer it to be my daily water.

Pei Pa Koa Syrup and Candy

I use my voice regularly for my work. Because of this, the possibility that I will overuse it and experience hoarseness is quite high. At the beginning of this year, I lost my voice for a week. I got back my voice back after finishing a full course of antibiotics plus rest. Two months after, I again lost my voice for a much longer time.

After another course of antibiotics and full voice rest for about 2 -3 weeks , my voice finally came back. Further investigation revealed that I suffer from acid reflux which affects my voice box. I also have to manage my cough immediately, if avoiding it proves impossible. To manage the former, I would need a prescribed medicine to manage stomach acid. For the latter, the ENT doctor suggested I take a Chinese herbal syrup or candy called Pei Pa Koa. I got both. Since then, it has been my go-to resolution for managing cough and sore throat.

Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar

A good friend suggested that I try the Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar Health Drink for overall wellness. This drink requires 1-2 teaspoons of the vinegar to be mixed in 8-oz glass of purified water to be taken 3 times a day (upon arising, mid-morning, and mid-afternoon). Honey, maple syrup or molasses can be added to improve taste.

The taste can be a bit challenging although based on experience, it can be acquired. I try to eat apples on a daily basis as well since there is no substitute for the real thing. As the saying goes, an apple a day keeps the doctor away.

My Say

Searching for alternative remedies does not mean discarding doctor’s advise. It is always best to consult the doctor. We would also do well to understand our options so that we will not unnecessarily take in medicine that has potential side effects. Be responsible for your health by keeping yourself informed of health remedies that actually work.
