Simbang Gabi in the Philippines has long been part of the Filipino tradition of celebrating the Christmas Season. Simbang Gabi or Night Mass refers to a religious practice consisting of attending nine-day devotional masses.  It serves what is similar to a countdown to the main day itself  which is Christmas. Most Roman Catholics and Aglipayans observe this practice with much fervor and anticipation.

Historical Background of Simbang Gabi

The practice of Simbang Gabi traces its beginnings in the early days of Spanish rule. The early dawn mass was actually a result of a compromise between farmers and the clergy with the desire of the former to start work early to avoid the intense afternoon heat in the fields. It took the place of the early evening novenas and eventually became a cherished Filipino Christmas custom. The Christmas Eve mass is also known as Misa de Gallo or Rooster’s Mass.

When Is the Simbang Gabi Held?

The traditional Simbang Gabi is held from December 16 to December 24 during early dawn at about 3 to 5 am and not at night as both the English and Filipino translations imply. For several years now, the anticipated version of the Simbang Gabi has become an accepted alternative. This is done during evenings at about 8 to 10 pm from December 15 to December 23. This is to accommodate church goers who simply find it impossible to attend the dawn masses either due to work schedules or some other personal reasons.

Where is the Simbang Gabi Held?

Simbang Gabi masses are held in every church of religions that practice it. From the biggest cathedrals to the smallest community chapels, the faithful will troop to the designated places to participate in this wonderful tradition. A recent addition made in relation to the venue are the malls and other public places that allow masses to be held for the purpose. This is seen by some as a way of bringing the Church to the people although many prefer to come to real churches to attend Simbang Gabi masses.

What Is Done in Simbang Gabi?

People who participate in the Simbang Gabi practice first and foremost hear mass with the usual aim of completing the nine-day novena masses. In the Filipino tradition, churchgoers also get to enjoy specific food items that have become permanently associated with the activity such as puto bumbong, bibingka, suman, arroz caldo, latik, hot tsokolate, and salabat. Many vendors of these food will be selling their wares on the church grounds. The completion of the masses are being connected by some to the granting of a wish although the Catholic Church reminds the faithful that the practice is beyond that.

My Say

Christmas in the Philippines will not be complete without Simbang Gabi. It is both a religious practice and a cultural activity. Simbang Gabi is a Christmas tradition that is uniquely Filipino.
