Who isn’t familiar with the story of Romeo and Juliet, the star-crossed lovers in the tragedy of the same title written by William Shakepeare? These young lovers represent to many what one can do in the name of love. It is no wonder then that this story continues to be performed in various forms of artistic presentation. Romeo and Juliet by Manila Shakepeare Company returns on stage on August by popular demand.

The Rerun

After a brief but successful initial run last February and March of this year, Manila Shakespeare Company revisits Verona as 21st century Manila for the rerun of Romeo and Juliet. Actor-cum-director Nicanor Ramos is once again at the helm. Bright Shakespearean newcomers Nelsito Gomez and Rachel Coates reprise their roles as Romeo and Juliet, with strong support coming from the likes of Meynard Penalosa, Issa Litton, Katski Flores, Micko Yabut, and Jonas Gruet. The audience is once again expected to be moved by the production’s unique staging, subtle localization, and passionate ensemble performances.

My Say

Romeo and Juliet is probably the most popular work of Shakespeare. It has managed to defy time and culture considering that this story traces its roots to the Elizabethan era which most of us have limited knowledge of. This localized version should bring the story much closer to our hearts as it performed in a setting that we are more familiar with.

Even with having watched Romeo and Juliet in plays, movies, musicals, and opera performances many times over, there will always be something to look forward to especially when given a new twist like Romeo and Juliet by Manila Shakespeare Company. I will definitely be watching this with my family. A show like this is always a welcome opportunity to introduce my children to another side of entertainment and learning.
