Revisiting Childhood Games Online

Our childhood memories  can never be complete without revisiting games that gave us so much fun and entertainment.  While outdoor games provide the release of energy from young bodies bursting with so much of it, indoor games always provide a relaxing respite during lazy or rainy afternoons at home. It is unfortunate though that board games, tile-based games, and even paper-and-pencil games are almost non-existent in most modern households, especially with the advent of computer games.

Fortunately, game developers eventually realized that games of yesteryears still retain its charm  not only to the older group but also to younger players probably wondering how their ancestors whiled away their time to play. Our family’s board games and other similar games may have been in storage somewhere in our house for quite some time but the urge to play remains. The effort to look for them and bring them out at this time may a bit much due to the very busy schedule but that doesn’t prevent me from enjoying the online version.

Domino

What I love most about domino is the feel of the rectangular tiles traditionally made of ivory or ebony. Later commercial sets made use of synthetic materials such as plastic or resin. The easily distinguishable physical features of each piece is the line dividing its face and spots from zero to six appearing on each space.

In its most basic form, domino is a blocking game where the objective is to be the first to empty the stack of tiles held  by each player. I had a blast doing just this through Calculators.org, which I initially thought offered math games only. Playing this game online definitely brought me back to the times I enjoyed playing this with my friends. The only difference here is that I get to play against the computer.

Snakes and Ladders

How I can ever forget the thrill of making shortcuts through ladders and the frustration of having to go back when stopping on a snake? Snakes and Ladders Board Game is a certified classic. The object of this game, also known as Chutes and Ladders, is to be the first to reach the finish square according to die rolls.

In the online version, I again played against the computer although I noticed there is a choice to play with 5 friends as the game can accommodate up to 6 players. The playing board provides both the Snakes and Ladders option and the Chutes and Ladder. The latter was more popular in the US as children generally disliked snakes.

Tic-Tac-Toe

Tic-Tac-Toe is one of the simplest entertaining games there is. With just a pen and paper, two players can enjoy unlimited fun trying to be the first to place three of their marks (X or O)  in a row. Horizontal,  vertical, and diagonal formations are acceptable.

In the online version that I found, players can choose to play on 3×3, 5×5, or 7×7 grids. Play with the computer or a friend, the choice is yours.

My Say

It’s funny how some things like games bring back so many memories. Having fun need not be complicated. Sometimes it just means playing an online game when situations make physical play challenging or playing against a computer when friends are temporarily unavailable.
