If you feel like you haven’t been making the most of the new year, perhaps it’s time to think about starting a new hobby.  Whether you want to get active or learn a new skill, these are some hobbies that can help you make 2013 a year to remember.

Rock Climbing

As you stand on the ground of Manila’s Camp Sandugo and look at the 40 foot high rock wall ahead of you, it might be hard to imagine getting yourself to the top. It’s no wonder then that the sense of achievement when you finally reach the summit is incredible. There are rock walls designed for people of all abilities, so whether you consider yourself nimble with your hands and feet or aren’t really used to physical activity whatsoever, you’ll soon find yourself overcoming what you thought were your mental and physical barriers. Safety is paramount when rock climbing, so make sure you do it with a trained guide.

Learn a Musical Instrument

While it might be too late to become a concert pianist, there’s nothing to stop you from becoming good enough to entertain your friends and family, and most importantly yourself. If you’ve never learned to play an instrument before, you’ll love the satisfaction that comes from learning a new tune. While you will need patience and dedication, the ability to create beautiful music is a gift you will be able to savor for the rest of your life.

Cooking Lessons

This might be the most practical hobby on the list, but that doesn’t make it any less fun. Even a great cook can learn something new from attending a culinary school, whether it’s a new technique or a new style of cuisine. The best thing about taking cooking lessons is being able to share what you’ve learned by cooking an impressive meal for your friends and family at the end of it!

Amateur Dramatics

You don’t need to be a good actor to get involved with your local amateur dramatics group, as there are lots of other roles to fill. You could help design costumes, build sets, direct the action, make sure the lighting for the stage is just right, or provide the sound effects. Whatever talents you have, you’ll be able to make a positive impact. Meanwhile if you do have a desire to have your moment in the spotlight, this could be your time to shine.

Parkour

If you want to try something completely new why not give parkour a go? Also known as free running, parkour is like a type of street gymnastics that involves moving about your environment by climbing, rolling, running, jumping, and any other way your body is able to move. You’ll definitely want the guidance of someone who’s been practicing parkour to show you how to keep safe. There are groups across the Philippines to join and people who practice parkour (known as traceurs) are renowned for being friendly and welcoming. One of the great things about parkour is that it requires very little equipment. Loose fitting clothing and a pair of trainers are all you need to get your heart racing.

Don’t Wait Till Next Year

In fact, don’t even wait till tomorrow. Every day you wait is another day you could be missing out on finding something you’re passionate about, so why not make 2013 the year you try something new.
